Albums Listened To In November (62)

This month is a rarity, in which there are more albums that stand out as 'bad' then those who are overwhelmingly 'good.' Usually each month I rant and rave about the amazing albums and only have albums that fall into the bad category because I am nitpicking some detail. Not this month.

Good
A newcomer here at The Guide, Jefferson Colby plays a really creative style of semi-progressive stoner rock. His album, Octopus, was something new and refreshing, and I look forward to hearing his other releases. The new Whores of Tijuana album, Psycholongevity, was a superb sophomore release from the group. Their self-titled debut showed promise and the group delivered with their second. Go check it out. A complete surprise was the brand new album by The Ocean, Heliocentric. I have heard a couple of albums by the group and have not been too impressed, I only put the album on because I had just come home and I wanted something to unwind to, and what better then some usually-dull post-metal? What followed was anything but. It was full of complexities and layered sounds and different focuses between songs. A complete surprise. I'm going to go into more about it, I'm working on the article now.

Ok
The Swamp Sessions were ho-hum at best, but I've already gone into that. Blaak Heat Shujaa's self-titled debut wasn't as great as I was expecting from a group with a great name. It trudged through the lines of psychedelic and stoner with abandon; sometimes working wondrously, sometimes failing. They have skills and could be something amazing. I'm going to have to keep my eyes out.
The following two bands, Clagg and Cough, are only on the 'Ok' list (even though I didn't really like them) because their music was fabulous but their vocals were atrocious. I can't fully damn these groups just because I don't much care for their style. So that's why they are 'Ok' when after you read my review of Ritual Abuse (and I have another for Lord of The Deep coming up eventually) and think I hate the groups. It is just not so.

Bad
And here we come to the main performance of the night ladies and gentlemen; the 'Bad' collection. Instead of a long and drawn-out synopsis of the works, this is going to be quick and easy: Acid Witch's Midnight Mass EP: so-so music with horrible death growls. Insufferable. Jacknife Holiday's Stinkin' N Drinkin' EP: A mix of hardcore and NWOAHM, and not in a good way (as if there could be a good way). Locrian's The Crystal World: Horrible, simply horrible. Read the full review. And finally Rorcal's Heliogabalus: a hour and ten minute droning nothingness of a doom album. Crappy ambient music with screams and growls over top.

Whew glad that's over. Hopefully December won't be as difficult.
